Far far away land
I have a 55 gallon for now stocked and with an emperor 400. I have an old 10 gallon lying around to use for a sump. I wanted to try it on this first before I get my big 150 gallon setup cause thats a lot of water if I make a mistake.

Do I need a hang on the back overflow box if my tank isnt drilled?
I get that i need a tube for syphoning and then a return, but what powers it besides gravity a power head? also I was wanting to use flexible pvc pipes is that a problem? Also I sort of get the check valve idea but not that great.

I good with fish, but not plumbing... help!!!

new to me too but i think that the very first divider on the far left has to be eliminated then its good to go!! with that first divider the water flow wont go thru the scrubbies it will just float over top the first (far left) divider you need the water to flow all the way thru to the bottom then back up to the second chamber and i think most ppl have a another divider that has numerous holes in the plate tray that all the scrubbies sit on top of just above the bottom in the first chamber hope i helped!!!

As slednex11 stated, remove the first chamber - this will allow for the trickle effect (wet/dry) so that half the media in the first chamber is submerged and the other trickled over with water for aerobic bacteria.

Make sure your media in the first chamber is off the bottom of the sump by about 10cms.

Yes you will need some sort of overflow if your tank is not drilled. Look at the stickies in the DIY for PVC overflow or alternatively invest in a o/f box (expensive)

The ball valve is to level the amount of water pumped back into the tank against the amount being drained into the sump - this should be equal

Would this be a better design?
