hey guys im going from p's to aros and i was wondering if i should get a silver or aro for my 135 gal.
it will be kept solitary
in my lfs the silver and aro look almos the same does this change as they get older? any way to tel the two apart?

Assuming your 135g is 72" x 18" x 24". It could only house a silver aro comfortably upto 20-22". Silver aros grow quite fast a least an inch a month until they reach 24-25" then they only grow a couple inches a year. So with buying a silver under ten inches now, it would be to big for your tank within a year. If you could upgrade even to a 180g (6' x 2' x 2') you could get by for 3-4 years. Eventually though a silver aro is gonna require a 8 foot long 30 inch wide tank.

I am not sure what your asking here, but silver arowanas and black arowanas do look similar

what is the size of the silver aro
careful of what you buy
check whether the aro is eating or not and all other symptoms
my first aro(6" silver aro) died the third day after coming home
anyways all the best and good luck

he asked if he should get a silver OR aro. he doesnt even know what fish he is talking about:screwy:

dandmatic just so you know the aro's that you can keep in the US are:
silver arowana
black arowana
jardini arowana
leichardti arowana
african arowana

the 135 is 6 feet
the arowana's at my lfs are silver and jar (2 inches)
but when i look at them they both look similar
however when i look at some of the jars on here some of them have some crazy colors
will jars change color when they get older? cuz right now the silver and jar look almost identical

Im sorry but jardinies and silvers look nothing alike the silver is one stream line fine a jardini as 3 fins i think if they are selling a jardini tha looks lik a silver its prbly not a jardini. ANd you will eventuly need a bigger tank its a fine grow out but...

is 72" not 6 feet? so all that I posted in my first reply still applies.

Also I agree silvers and jars do not look alike, you may want to look again and lokk closer. All the crazty colored aros you are seeing are most likely Asian aros.

oh and I was in the same situation with getting an aro, but changed my mind after some reading. I agree with stingray man. need a bigger tank

another thing to note is that aro's(well atleast silvers, idk bout jars) tend to be fairly delicate when under 8", if it is your first aro i would try to find one atleast 6-8".

I can see how someone unfamiliar with different Arowana would think they look similar, especially when small.
The Jardini will take longer to outgrow your tank, but it will be more expensive and must be kept alone due to a nasty attitude when they get larger.
The Silver should be less expensive, and can live with most fish that can't fit in it's mouth, but will be cramped in your tank much sooner.

Figure out if your willing and able to upgrade to a larger tank in the next year or so, then decide if you like one badass fish (Jardini) or a badass fish that can get along with some others (Silver).

Good luck and happy fish shopping!!
