Hello everyone,
Just thought that I would introduce myself.My name is Penny. .. I am new to the cichlid world as well as this site.. I just bought my first three yesterday. I am so in love with them.I am going to buy some more in the future. I have a 55 gallon tank to start.Just wondering how many cichlids I can put in there without overcrowding.Will post pics of the ones I have soon. I am so excited..How did I ever miss these babies before?!?!? Is there any tips anyone can give me on the the upkeep of them and what kinds I can mix together...

What types of fish did u get ?

it does depend on how many you got, you could already be overstocked if they are something like oscars or jack dempseys, but if they are african ciclids, most of them stay smaller and you could have 20 in a 55...jsut depends on what fish you have...
 
Welcome to the very addictive world of cichlid keeping. What kind do you have? If you're unsure, just post a pic of them and we can ID them for you.

HA! once you start... you wont be able to stop!

any way i would say a male GT and a male JD would go nice in a 55g although the thing with cichlids is that the aggression levels are different and so some may kill others if not with right mix. any way you will have alot to learn as do everyone who starts. really its trial and error but we will allways be here to help with your questions.

if you post some pics of the fish you bout the other day we can help idetinfy them or if they are juviniles we can show you pics of what they will be like when they mature.

also we will tell you if your fish are compatible and if they are suitable for your tank although i can guarantee that before long you will be buying something like a 150gal or hopefully something bigger for your monster to live in..!

what filtration have you got on your 55? have you ever kept fish before? is your tank cycled?

Okay I feel kind of ashamed for not knowing whats all in mytank as far as filterationa nd stuff.That is why I mainly joined here to figure this out. I would appreciate anyone helps and tips..I will post the pics of my fish tonight.. because I do not know what kind they are..I got them from a friend who didn't know as well. Thanks for all the responses and will post pics soon.How will I know what kind of filteration and stuff like that.?! I feel like an idiot.

well as for the filtration what filters are on the tank? just the standard??
