Sorry Admins for the cross post... I just found the Datnoid forum.
Hi all! I gotta say this is a kick ass website! I've been reading through several threads, and it seems I've found the right place. I'm not a newb to fish keeping, though I have limited experience with large aggressive species. I'm in search of some suggestions when it comes to keeping Tiger Datnoids. I'm looking to purchase a few (3 or 4) young Datnoids, they are all roughly 1" in length. I'd like information on growth rates and tank size, feeding, and any special concerns for this species. Yes, I can google! I've done that already, and have come to conclusion that I need the advice of experienced Datnoid keepers. I have an 20 gallon laying around, just wondering how long that'll last me? My idea is to do a planted tank with a few other southeast asian fish to start. Maybe some glass cats, few barbs, and couple loaches. I understand these species will eventually become potential food items for the Datnoids as they mature. I'll eventually move the Datnoids into larger aquaria with other appropriate sized fish. Any suggestions and comments would be very helpful, thanks.

They grow REALLY slowly, so a 20 gallon would do for a while. I feed mine bloodworms, and others have had success with shrimp as they get bigger. Clown loaches seem to be good tankmates for them as they also grow slowly, and stay with the asian theme. I've found that they like well-oxygenated tanks with the temp around 78 degrees, and plenty of hiding spots to make them feel more comfortable. Dark substrate makes their yellow really stand out, and I think it also helps them be more stable.

Keep reading these forums, and maybe check out TigerCraze

Good luck.

yeah, dbenson is pretty much right. they will take a while to outgrow the 20g. tigercraze.com is a pretty cool site, but kinda slow IMO.

very slow growers youll have a long time before you need a 150 or so for these fellas i have roughly 10 or soe and im trying to grow them out for about half a year no with no luck of speeding the time of growth

I think it would be possible to speed the growth by putting each dat in its own set up and basically doing daily water changes as well as feeding it as much as possible. Worked with my jag, getting 1.25" out of it per month. Which was pretty dumb of me cause it quickly outgrew any of my set ups, lol. XP Cause this way they have no competition for food, no stress from being picked on, etc etc.
