Hey all, I would like to come here and introduce myself as new to the hobby of fishkeeping. Since a young boy I have always been fascinated with the hobby, but never really read about the amount of effort and patience it took to maintain such a delicate lifestyle.
My interest grew into an obsession recently when my girlfriend and I decided to purchase a 55gal tank after having an up and running 20gal Eclipse system. At the LFS I came across an Oscar that I just had to have (as any n00b would want. Not to judge on any of the people keeping Oscars because I am now hooked, but after a little reading it is apparent that this common mistake is quite often made from new people joining the hobby) and with the addition to the Oscar I thought I would pick up a common Pelco (Suckerfish to me at the time) as well as an Apple Snail (without knowing that the snail is more of a mess maker than a clean up artist) as a clean up crew.
I happily house 2 Tiger O's (1 Veil-Tail (Hints the name) and 1 very stunning regular, 1 common Pelco and 1 Apple Snail. I hope to turn my 55gal into a grow out for the fish in there already and pick up a 175gal within the upcoming future.
A few years back my mom bought a 6" Jag (Banzai) which was housed in a 90gal octagon. He grew to a massive size (didn't actually measure, but knew when he died he weighed quite a bit) and was the meanest fish I have ever seen. When he died (moving from SJ to Fresno) I knew one day I would own a Jag again which was mainly the reason for picking the O's since the LFS didn't carry Jags.
After reading on this site for a few weeks now I finally decided to take the plunge and join. I have read through countless threads on everyone's different filtration systems, to tank setups. I even read the pages of Arapaimaman's 15,000gal tank that the members of MFK helped him set up. You guys have inspired me to learn more about the lifestyle of fishkeeping and have made me promise myself to take care of what I have and dream for what I want.
Sorry for the long read, but I wanted to thank the members of MFK for having such a passion for what they do.
