Hey guys,

I would like to say hello to all of you. Ive had fish all my life and am now taking the plunge to gar:newbie:. They are so awesome. I have a huge tank that i have turned into a headboard for my bed, and i would like to put a gar or two in. I would just like to know the basics, what to feed them, what makes good tank mates, what to keep the water temp at, ph lvls things of that nature. Once again glad to have found this play and meet all of you.

Well I'm happy to say your off to a good start by wanting Gar. They are truly the best and most uniquely beautiful fish there is. Whenever I go to the pet store all these other "fish" just look like basic fish, just different colors or patterns, but all so boring. Anytime I had other fish and people came over all they would talk about is the Gars.
You will grow close with these fish as they are fairly aware of what's going around them. Especially if you have them as part of your bed. You'll be able to lay there for hours just watching them. Especially first thing in the morning when you're half asleep. It's kinda cool just to lay there and watch them as you awake into reality. Also when you got your girl in bed and are taking care of business the Gar will be especially interested, it's a little creepy with their pointed snout, but in a way it's wildly natural :headbang2

You're gonna love em....
GAR POWER!

Thanks man. it looks like ive come to right place. Ill for sure post pics of my tank and gar once its all setup and going well. What do u usually keep ur tank at temp wise, and do your gar have tank mates?

my gar are species only. i have 3 florida gars. they are the best beginner gar. 6 by 3 is best for them though a standard 125g will work for a long time. they handle a large range of ph and a few tank mates. nothing silvery, too big too small or too aggressive. i raised(and still feed mine) feeders.

Welcome to the world or GAR!
Good choice!
I got a Spotted Gar 1 month ago, and switched him to frozen feeders in a week.
Handfed him in 10 days. :D
Now he comes up to beg for food, and is much fun to watch when hunting!

My other fish are tankmates you do NOT want, if the gar is the first in your tank.
1- A school of Silver Dollars.(may attract the fishes attention and snap them in half when bigger)
2- An Oscar- Too big and boisterous and too wild and so on.
3- Pleco's- They may try to eat the Gar's slimecoat, when the Gar is resting on the gravel and the Gar tend not to do anything about it, causing nasty infections.

My Gar came in last and despite the worst possible tankmates is doing fine, though.
But I got to keep a very close watch!

Awesome guys thanks a bunch...i was thinking some kind of catfish as a tank mate. Any suggestions as to what u guys like?

limas are the only cat i know that is kinda ok

any cats that dotn get too big and dont get too small will work.
big cats like RTCs will be tempted to eat the gars.

when I upgrade my tank it will bebecause my gar becomes to big.
I was told a Lima or a Juruenses catfish will do well with him then.
I hope my Gar reaches full potential size!
