hi all...found the site a couple weeks ago absolutely fantastic info here.

I recently purchased a 75 gallon tank and stand off craigslist. It came with 2 penguin 350 bio wheels, but they didnt have the actual wheels :) I replaced them with an aquatop cf 500UV(525GPH) current stock is 2 small oscars(2") 1 5" pleco I will be adding 3-4 small clown loaches and 1 to 2 more 2-3" fish possibly more oscars maybe JDs. my questions are:

1) the water is currently slightly cloudy. I would call it an 8 out of 10 on the clear scale. Can I get those last 2 points by adding one of the pneguin 350s back, filling it with quilt batting(or the like) and putting a 2-4 scrubbies in place of the bio wheels?

2) When should I turn on this UV sterilizer in the canister filer?

3) with the above mentioned stock will this be sufficient filtration for the next 1-1.5yrs?(I will be upgrading tanks after I purchase a new house in that time frame)

Thanks for the help

Water is cloudy from ammonia spike id guess cuz its a new tank. More bio media

Id turn on the uv now

And your filtration is fine, use ur peguin for mech filtration and load up the aqua w/ ceramic bio

On a side not one oscar and a few others are enough, 2 oscars in a 75 will be wayyyy to dirty

oh and I am hoping to get into a bigger tank before the 75 becomes to small. Worst case I can get a bigger tank and keep it in the garage temporarily, but I hate that.

Are you aware that you will be needing a much larger tank in the near future with that stock? 75g will hold ONE(1) full grown Oscar, by itself, no other fish. Your looking at 150g+ tank.

well I backed off of getting the clown loaches..the tank right now has 2 small oscars and 1 pleco. thats it. Yes I do plan to get a much larger tank within 1-1.5 years. I will get one sooner and store it in the garage if I have to for the comfort of the fish, but since my tank is 18" deep I figure I have some time before they are feeling cramped. I was actually thinking of a 250+ tank for my next step. Either use the 75 as a sump or grow out tank of some kind.

Some ppl just comment and dont read the others. Like i said ur good, 2 O's are alot of work and their like dogs!

My uv stays on 24/7

Get a test kit or strips to test nitrite nitrate and ammonia so u know when to do water changes. A few loaches wouldnt hurt but wait a few weeks till ur bacteria is established!!

GL ask more q's if u need!
