Hi all just joined the site been reading post on it for a few weeks now. I used to be big into the hobby of raising and keeping aggressive freshwater fish I've had red belly piranhas, oscar, jack dempseys, arowana, live caught small mouth bass, catfish just to name a few. I've been out of the hobby about 10 years and just recently was donated a small 45 gallon aquarium and by setting it up it awakened the love that I forgot that I had for these fish as pets.

Which brings me here and asking all of your infinite wisdom and advice. Currently I have a baby red devil a small electric blue JD and 2 baby jags all in the 45. Now I'm aware I'm on borrowed time and only have a few months to get a larger home for these guys. I'm in the process this spring of building a bar around a large aquarium in my downstairs "man cave". I have the space and funds to go pretty large so I'm going to be in the range of 200-320 gallons.

My questions are 1. am I supplying enough room for my current fish the 2 jags and the RD to coexist without murdering one another? (I'll prolly leave the electric blue Dempsey in the 45 as his own once they get bigger). 2. If a tank that big would allow me to add any other fish on my wish list? Which includes any of the following but not all of course; a dovii, a black belt, or a umbee. Also what other fish like eels or oddballs if any could I maybe add into the setup because for that big of a tank and the back drop off my bar I not only want variety of some of my favorite fish but just a decent amount of fish without being overpopulated. The jag is my favorite so if you tell me nothing else will work out of the above scenarios I'd be content to have 2 full grown jags in there but for all that space I'd like to have some cool variety. I'm aware my dovii is probably a pipe dream based on the research I've done the past few weeks. Anyways thanks for any help our advice and I can't wait to share pics and updates in the coming months.

Ime once the red devil hits 5 or 6 inches he is going to be a problem. And the ebjd will probably be the first to go. Same goes for the jags when it comes to aggression. And they will hit that size in no time.

A dovii and an umbee will require 200 gallons alone. And even that may eventually become small.(someone else will chime in on that) But the jags, a black belt, and the red devil might work out in 200-300 gallons. Bigger is always better, of coarse.

Yea I had figured already that the ebjd wouldn't survive long once his peers get some size. Right now the jags and the devil are 1"-2" and the ebjd is like 3" I got him a little bigger so he'd be able to defend himself better in the short time he's sharing a tank with the others. And I figured I wouldn't be able to swing a Dovii or a unbee just had to ask lol wishful thinking they're cool fish.

They're still going to outgrow the jack though. Right now they should be ok but not for very long.

All right so I'll probably go with a 300 gallon and so far just put my 2 jags a red devil and maybe a black belt in it. Is there any other fish that I could put in there that may coexist like a red tail cat fish or a type of eel? I'd like some sort of top feeder but I've had a arowana before and I love the way they move but never cared for the look they're very bland and kind of ugly IMO.

A fire eel might work idk the jag may kill it. A red tailed catfish would not work they get to big to fast and a 300gallon is about a third of what it would need as an adult

alright thanks all for the advice visited my local fish store and got similar feedback as well. One further question what pump setup would you recommend for the 300 gallon a wet dry sump with a canister or just 2 canisters? And fish store guy said I'd prolly need 3 separate heaters? I found online there is one long heater that is capable of heating a 300 by itself? Do I really need 3 heaters or would one that's rated for 300 be sufficient?

you can throw some regular dempseys in the mix if its a 300 gal you could toss in a few of em .dempseys don't push their boundaries they mind their own business especially if they know they are not the toughest. my Dempsey stays away from my jag in my 125 the jag is 9 inches the dempseys 6.5 the Dempsey stays in his cave

Yea I used to have a full grown tiger Oscar and a full grown dempsey and I remember the Dempsey being pretty calm and to himself and the Oscar always kicking his @$$ when he'd encroach on the Oscars territory but overall he was pretty calm. I might try him in the big tank once they're all full grown under a tight watch and if I see him getting picked on too much I'll pull him and give him the 45 gallon I have to himself. I'm going to provide plenty of hiding and covering spots in the 300.

I think 2 jags, rd and bb would do fine in 300 gallons.
