Hello

i just registered to this site and i don't even know if im posting this right..but i have a question about an arowana..i just got myself a 150g tank for free..and was wondering if i could put an aro in there..Ive always wanted one but wasn't too sure if it was a good idea..i have Oscars, plecos, chiclids, and other fish but arowanas interest me..the tank is 4' long 2' wide and im not sure how high..would that tank hold a arowana in the long run?

thanks all

No. Even the smaller growing species of arowana will get to 2'+ length "in the long run", and the faster growing species like silvers will get there in a couple of years. That tank would be a good grow out for the first 12 months or so, but too small for long term.

4' by 2' is a lot better than some of these restauraunts I have seen....I go to these Chinease restaurant that has a 1ft silver aro in a 55g....Yaeh the fish was growing in the 55 from half its current present size.......Your tank would support a juvenile(3-7 incher) for about a year and halfis what most experst would say......I would trade the 4ft by 2ft blueprint in for a LONGER 125, the basic 125g 6ft by 18inches print..........Longer tanks are way better than wider tanks.........

You chop off 6 inches from the width if you switch to a 125, not like 2' width is enough for life anyways. What he needs to do is get a bigger tank when that thing hits like 16-18". Why on earth would you even recommend him going down to a 125...

NEWBIE! lol the wider the better. you should keep your tank and upgrade to a WIDER tank not a LONGER tank. 4'x'2x'2 will be good for a while i got my aros in a 8'x2'x2' tank.

Dude,
Wider tank is essential for arowana, don't lose width for length!!! Turning space is just as important. I agree with the others that your tank will do as a initial tank, but upgrade for the long term.
Arowana are the mutts n*ts as we say in london. It will be the best fish you ever keep ( but then i am biased ;-) )

Let us know what you decide, and post a pic when you are up and running!

If you're willing to upgrade in a few years to a 350 or min 220. They are well worth the effort and $$$. a 150 should keep a silver happy for 1-2yrs depending on it's growth rate. If you intent to keep it with you cichlids ect.. grow-out or get an arrow larger then your cichlids. Personally I enjoy growing out my fish.

I started w/ a 2.5-3" juvi that just lost it's egg sac in a 20Long. That has lasted him about 3 months, until 8" and now he's getting upgraded to a 75. and his next upgrade will be a 180. then an indoor pond.

and I completely agree width and length are most important from my own research and listening to the guys on here who have beautiful specimins. as they say, proof is in the pudding.

Have a game plan if you want one of these giant beautiful fish, and you'll be well rewarded. My arrow has quickly become one of my top 3 favorites.
