I would like to start an african cichlid tank. It's a 55g tank that is now empty. I have experience with SA cichlids but never had african cichlids. So what would you suggest for a newbie with african cichlids and what can be comfortable in a 55 g? Thanks so much for info.

What type of africans are you interested in? If you are looking for lake malawi or frontosa or the other lakes this thread should be moved there..

Thats the thing I don't really know exactly what im looking for. But i want to get ideas of what type will be ok in a 55g. And what is a good kind to start with for someone who is beginner with this type of fish.

most of your african cichlids that are small are in the malawi {african reef forum} try looking at some pics in there... even the stickies.. and see if you like any..if you do like them i will move this thread over there... otherwise take a look at some of these.. jewels and others.. that get larger .. meaning you must have fewer fish... netherwords get an idea of what you like .. then start asking about it so we can help you better.. :D

west african species like pelvicachromis are fun, or maybe some aipistos,or a shellie tank w/brevis and occies? there is really no end to the possibilities. I would recomend figuring out what you really want and research them.

Thank you, i know i am being so vague. I will start looking around and be more specific, i didn't even know if i was posting in the right section. sorry for being a pain lol.
Thank you for the ideas. :) i will get cranking on it.

What kind of water comes out of your tap might be a determining factor.
If your water is hard with a pH above 7, the rift lake cichlids would fit perfectly.
If the tap is soft, pH below 7, then the west Africans would be better for you.
Also whether you like a lot of fish together, or prefer a few.
Many rift lke cichlids need to be crowded to disperse aggression.
If color is important, the Malawi cichlids are similar to salt water reef fish with dazzling multiple colors.

Thank you for that info.

So far the kind that has captured my interest the most is the jewel cichlid. They are west african right? i am slowly learning here. I am guessing my thread needs to be moved too lol. sorry. I am being a pain I know.

Thank you :)

I find them to be very beautiful so far. I am glad to hear that they have similar to sa/ca bc i do have experience with that and am very comfortable with raising sa/ca.
