Or you could try some subliminal message tapes on your wife...make a tape of some white noise or waves crashing or something, and play it when you and your wife go to bed, and then when she's drifting off, a calm voice will say "snaaaaaaakes are cooooooool.......you waaaaant a snaaaaake...."

:ROFL:I did that once... and she wasn't quite herself the next morning.:WHOA::naughty::headbang2  I felt so violated...

(Disclaimer: IT NEVER HAPPENED! I SWEAR!)

Ummmm.... muds and sidenecks... WAY different. If you want a good, personable (and beautiful) pond turtle, try these: albino red-ears, spiny soft shells, painteds, and diamondback terrapins. All are temperate(ish) species and would do fine in Virginia other than winter. I have experience with all but the last one, and diamondbacks are one of the premier turtles, a gem.

Try looking at turtleman.com, turtlesale.com, and market.kingsnake.com for high quality turtles. Scam-free. If you want to ask about an ad, wed be glad to 'analyze' it. I know some of those people personally, and kingsnake.com is a better source than fuanaclassifieds and repticzone (please dont go there).

So check out those turtles, all are excellent choices, much more so than the african sideneck and mud. In terms of ease, the mud is definately #1, but not nearly as fun as the others. Good luck and keep looking! :)

I'll post my list in the morning or after school

Softshells are very nervous turtles. My mom's got one that we never see because it hides ALL the time. And when it does come out, it swims away quickly as soon as someone walks by. Other than that, they're pretty cool when they do decide to chill and let you see them. They can get really big though.

Loco, don't discount faunaclassifieds as a good source for information. Kingsnake.com is definitely not scam-free although they seem to be working on that, and the guy who runs faunaclassifieds seems to be putting a lot of effort into helping clean up the reptile hobby. Fauna's Board of Inquiry forum is a great resource on which vendors are trustworthy and who you need to watch out for.

The best way is still go to a local herptile organization or expos. You will meet a lot of people who put their reptiles on display and a lot of good vendors if you know who they are. I think the fall ones are ending in September and October, so check on the dates if you do end up going.

I won't touch on the issue of scam, BOI or the community sense of justice. When they go wrong, they REALLY go wrong.

Oh, thats right youre in VA beach! If youre up for a car trip, you can attend NARBC in Chantilly, Richmond Reptile show, or maybe MARS in Baltimore (you just missed it!). A good expo can't be beat in terms of sheer selection.

Faunaclassifiedss................ ehhhhhh. I don't disagree with you, but after checking out repticzone, fauana is at least better than that. Let me warn you here and now, repticzone.com is a rathole. Just don't even start. I would check fauana if there was something I aabsolutely had to have that wasnt offered at KS. But KS if better moderated IMO, and certainly better in terms of things to do. They have the classifieds of course, hundreds of forums, a chatroom, videos, photo gallery, business links, book and supplies reviews, and who knows what else. But ANYWHERE you go, unless you really know the person, check with someone knowledgeable for 'approval'. But a scam is unlikely if you know who to buy from and what to look out for. I'll get that word doc now and paste it in.

And softshells or ANY reptile will of course be nervous. They think youre a giant monster going to eat them. Give all reptiles some time to get used to your presence before you even think about touching them. But I agree, probably not the best for a first time turtle owner, but still not a bad choice. I say albino red ears simply because they are STUNNING and almost never seen neglected in the conditions you would see normals. But they run about 150-300 depending on age, color, and size. You know females get bigger than males for the ones I listed right? Just letting you know.

My list has just about EVERY breeder I 'approved of' for all my favorite herps. It's got turtle stuff and supplies stuff you could use, and feel free browsing the others in case you don't decide on a turtle (which I still strongly suggest you do).

So give me a few minutes before you start firing off!

Alright here it is, I put a ? by the ones I am unsure of the site name, but its only a few. If you see anything that strikes your fancy let us know and well help you decide. Or if you have questions about a place, let us know. And if anyone has a problem or negative experience with one, tell me! I don't want to advertise for a bad person. Well its not really advertising, but you get it. But yeah... enjoy. I might edit it later if I see something I want to change...

Btw, I know there are TONS and TONS more ball python and boa sites. Don't make a fuss because I didn't include 'super pro star ultra mega ball pythons' or some such other thing. :) Enjoy

I'll have to disagree with the whole softshell-nervousness thing. I have had many softys, and currently have one. None have been nervous once they know you, then they become like puppy dogs.
And if you want personality - go with a softy, OR a musk/mud turtle. I think somebody has some things backwards. But that's okay - each turtle is different. Do keep in mind that she is keeping it in a smaller aquarium, so a musk turtle is still her best bet.
Kingsnake.com is a good source for baby turtles and they are nicely priced as well. You will not find a legal one in a pet store under 4 inches.
