I decided to try a mixed dark substrate and so far I love it. It feels deeper and easier to look at, and they seem to be more comfortable without the super bright white sand. It's Carib-Sea Floramax (black) with a little of red/white/brown mixed in.

I also removed the divider so the female is a little roughed up... they are preparing to breed again.

Great set up! Those umbees are looking killer:) I bet it won't be long before they spawn again. How big is the male now?

LOOKS GREAT Jason !!!! love the contrast, add a couple more plants draping in from the top and its a 10/10

Thanks guys, glad you like it. I've been looking into potted plants (especially large amazon swords) lately but I'm not sure they will survive these Umbee lol. I used to try plants in my setups but after all the headaches I ended up taking them out. Lost more money than it was worth.

He's probably around 6" now. I was thinking of maybe selling the female locally and just raising him as a wet pet, with a nice fancy pleco or something as tankmate. I have a 6" Royal Pleco that would look great in that tank. Honestly I have no use for all the fry they will produce and I want more of a quiet, good looking display tank without all the chasing around and stress that breeding brings. Between setting the divider, covering the filter intakes for the fry every time and making sure she stays alive during courtship/husbandry I think it's too much going on, not worth it imo unless I was going to make money out of it.

Not really sure, it's a hard decision. I'll probably keep her for some time and see what happens. Maybe talk to a LFS here and see if they want Umbee fry, I haven't seen one for sale in Miami in at least 4 years.

It can be very stressful breeding and raising fry... I'm not gonna have any hard feelings against you selling the female:) go for if you like, that male is gonna stunn with or without her bro! And umbee fry aren't as profitable right now.

Great looking tank and Umbee! What size is the tank?
