Hey gang. I just purchased a 200 ish gallon tank from a really nice guy. I saw it full of water, no leaks, seems fine. after I got it home I noticed there are no cross braces on the top or the bottom. Its 72"x24"x28". It has the usual plastic frame around top and bottom and there is no evidence that any braces have been removed. Its drilled so i am able to measure the thickness of the glass, which is 3/4 of an inch. (thats right, I said .75") I'm a wee bit nervous about this monstrousity bowing out when filled. Am I just a Nervous Nellie or is the massive thickness of the glass making up for the lack of bracing?? Do I have to silicone a piece of 3/4 inch glass across the top? Will that do anything other than look cool?? I would appreciate any wisdom from all comers on this topic! thanks guys!!

Was the a place were a brace had been. I just picked up a 180 with 3/4-1 in thick glass. Had no place for a brace and was told on here it would be fine

Add a brace or two. I have 1/2in glass on my 225g with two braces. Easier to do it now then have the tank break or really I should say, explode.

The one thing that I cant overlook is this has been an aquarium for at least 10 or 15 years without bracing, so why am I worried????:

Older tanks were made with thicker glass, no braces. It should be fine.

If it's 3/4", or 19 mm, it's extra thick. That's a 5.1 safety factor. You're fine with no brace. If you want to add a brace it would be for peace of mind.

Thanks guys! One more stupid question, had to buy a small dumptruck full of substrate, got about 22 bags of Floramax, there are about 5 bags of Ecocomplete mixed in there, ok to mix them? Also I would like to use some playsand in some areas, any issues?
