So I picked up a 55 gallon tank setup on Craigslist for $75. The tank had rodents in it at one time and the silicone was chewed a little, but it was cleaned pretty well and has been filled for 8 hours now and no leaks of any kind. It came with an old emperor 400. I cleaned it up because it was a mess, and now I need to know what to use in the media trays. I also need to get new bio-wheels, but I will be transferring the bio cartridge from my 29 gallon setup with aquatech filter to start the process. I am refinishing the stand because it looked pretty bad, and I was wondering if I should do diy lighting with a 4 foot shop light, or use the two old crappy hoods with two 18" lights? I'm on a pretty tight budget. So in the next few days I will be emptying the 29 gallon guys into a temporary rubbermaid because the new tank is going where the old one is, I'll transfer all the water, sand, decor to kickstart the bacteria growth. Should I be worried about a new cycle? Here's a pic of it:

I am going for a darker stain/black paint because the oak doesn't match my current furniture and I think I am going to try and spray paint the oak trim on the tank black or something to try and match the stand. Let me know what you guys think.

answering what to put in your filter, i got the same kind of deal except for the tank was advertised as a 55g but its was really a 30g(o well, its was only 30 bucks) and it came with filter airstones airpumps hood, etc. it had a 55g filter and i just went to walmart and bought their 55g filter cartridges and they fit perfectly! being that the filter they gave me is over 10 years old(though it works as if new) i couldnt believe it! after that i got some stuff i cant remember but its like a blue foam and i put that after the cartridge to remove more solid wastes
nice pickup btw

Shop lights are $10 at walmart and the light can be bought for $5. So either way, it wouldn't be that expensive. I would just buy lights for the already light hoods, but it's your choice.
