Scomberoides. Notice the position of dorsal fin relative to anal fin? I believe the armatus dorsal is located in front of the anal in overall position on the fish. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

And you can expect a fairly slow growing fish - 1/4-1/2" in one to 2 months...
 
Clay - I'm actually starting to think its not a hydrolycus at all, but a cynodon gibbus.

Which grow to just under a foot, which explains why many people say they die before they grow over a foot in an aquarium :)

The cynodon has different eyes, smaller pupils, a mouth that's even more angled upwards, and is much more silvery than the hydrolycus.

What do you think?

Check this out...

"The species is very similar appearing to the genus Hydrolycus. The anal fin of this species helps in identifying between the genera. The anal fin starts anterior of the dorsal fin. In Hydrolycus the anal fin starts posterior of the dorsal fin. The fish is strictly ichthyophagous like other members of the clade."

So all hydrolycus species have the anal fin that starts behind the dorsal fin.

DAMN, looks like I got a cynodon gibbus and not a hydro >_<
 
I think you're right. And I have owned a few of those too. I had a mix tank with scomberoides, gibbus and raphiodon vulpinnis 7ish years ago or so I haven't kept them in a while. Good call on the cynodon. Looking at the face, I think you're spot on.

How were the Gibbus temperament/character-wise compared to scomberoides and vulpinus? I'm interested in them, and this is my first fish from this family :)
