Tough to tell at the best of times, not the best pictures either. I wouldn't argue with your early diagnosis at this point in time. I have Bifa that looked very similar to that as well at that size though

Blue/green is the general color. Even in the best of pictures these fish wont look much different. Theres a slight bit of red as well. My other guess would be guttulatus possibly? Is there any reason to count them out?

I wouldn't count out much when it comes to young Vieja. I was unable (still sort of unable) to ID my favorite fish. I had a thread up for a while and I think I got at least 7 different species as guesses. Bifasciatus, Zonatus, Fenestratus, Coatzacoalcos, Guttalatus, Synspilum, Hartwegi, and there may have been more. My point being is that they're all so closely related that even at a fully grown size they can be tough to ID. They're starting to think that some of the "species" are actually the same species as another one, from a different collection point. I forget which one that was, the most recently (I want to say Zonatus and Guttalatus?). I would still lean towards Zonatus, but it's anyone's guess at this point :)

Well, I've come to the conclusion that the small one is a guttulatus, and the larger one is most likely either a female zon or a gut female. Heres a shot of my male zonatus (:
