So I just put the Syns I have had in a 30 gallon for 2 months into my 55 with the Texas. The Syns is young and is about 3.5". The Texas is 2 years old and 8 to 10" and has had the tank to himself for awhile. I am in the process of building a stand for the like new 55 gallon that was given to me anf this will be for the Syns. I have 2 red jewels in the 30 gallon I have in the basement and they had torn the Syns fins off untill I put a divider in the 30 gallon. The Syns had only half the 30 gallon and no room to swim so that is why I wanted to move the Syns to a bigger area. I want to see if the Texas will tolerate the Sysn and so far he chasing the syns around. How long should I give these 2 to work it out till I remove the Syns back to the 30 with the divider.

Correction the Syns is 4.5 " and the Texas would not leave him alone so I put him back in the 30 gallon. His scales do not look good now and it will take a couple weeks for him to heal up. He was only in with the Texas for 1 hour. I need to go and get a filter so I can get this new tank running.

You should try and get a larger tank for both fish. A 55 is tight for both when full grown.

Short term you're probably better to get a divider for the 55g and section off a small portion for the vieja. 30G really is too small to be dividing up further.

Yes I know it is in the works. The Texas seems happy in the 55 by himself. He is in the living room and sees a-lot of action in the room and is always watching us. The other day my wife said why is that fish always staring right at you and it made me proud. I guess he likes me. The fact that I got this free 55 made me decide to build my first stand. I am looking a 125 and can not decide if I should go with the tall or long version of it. I'm leaning toward the tall version and that will be 6 feet wide compaired to 8'. Man this Syns looks bad now. It looks like the Texas scatched the eye area. Does this part heal like the scales do?

I hate to state the obvious, but you don't have the room for this fish and your poor syn has suffered the consequences because of it. I would say you would have been much better off waiting on having the appropriate space for this cichlid before you purchased it. Also I would think that most would agree that a 55 gallon tank is not very ideal for a syn as it grows. I would think a 75 or 90 would be better as a minimum sized tank.

I wish your fish the best in its recovery it might help to add in some aquarium salt if you have not already done so. Good luck.
