Hey everyone, I recently acquired a 55 gal tank. I want to turn it into a biotope with crabs, newts or salamanders, schooling fish, and live plants. I was hoping to get some help with types of the above listed animals I could house safely (mostly) together.

Thanks!

Newts and tetras work well together. There are many plants you can use, just depends on what you want it to look like.

Well I definitely want it to look as natural as possible. I'm planning on using a lot of driftwood, sand, and as many plants as possible, but leaving room for the fish. I was thinking tetras for sure. I thought it would be awesome to get some types of crabs like fiddlers or red claws, etc. But I dont know the compatibility of fish, newts, and crabs.

I was also thinking instead of multiple newts, getting one mudpuppy

Axolotl don't mix with anything else, otherwise their gills will get chewed off, and they will die. Mud puppies will eat tetras, and are far too big for a 55 gallon tank. Mixing crabs and amphibians is not recommended. Mixing amphibians with others, especially of different size, is also not recommended. I'd stick to one type of newt, and then some tetras.

i disagree. paddletails are highly predatory.

IMO, i would recommend a temperate mix of things such as firebelly newts, apple snails, white cloud minnows...

They are carnivorous like most newts, however they are small and slow. They stay primarily submersed. Firebelly newts are bad at staying in aquariums. Any large tetra will be fine with a paddletail newt.
