Hii! So, I'm going to be tearing down all of my small tanks and going with one big one in the living room, plus keeping my 100 in my bedroom.

So, do you guys buy your tanks new, or used? I'm thinking of something like a 75+gallon...I just don't know if I want to spend so much money on a new tank. But what's the risk of buying a used tank?

I'm a student, so I don't have much money...
Would it cost significantly less to build my own stand/canopy for the tank? Is this just as safe/reliable as buying an already-made stand? How long does it usually take to build a stand?

How about lighting...I want high lighting on this tank, LED's, I think. I'm going planted with this tank. How much would it cost to build my own LED fixture?

Thanks everyone :)

For the led's look into gu10's or 10w led flood lights (ebay). You could do your tank for under $50. A cheap 2x4 stand and diy glass lids will also be much cheaper and stronger.

where in Cali are you? I just took down my 80/90 (interior/exterior) gallon tank, stand and canopy I'm probably giving away relatively cheap- not without a good cleaning tho.. I'm in LA

I have in the past got all my tanks on CL and drove out to MANY places searching for good deals until the recent tank. The problems you get with used tanks are scratches and signs of usage, and possibility of buying one that leaks. For the most part it's not that bad, just prepare to do some work to save the most $$
