I am having trouble getting the water levels correct in my overflow box and my sump. If I move the overflow box up the water level in the sump drops too low and the pump takes on air. If I have it down the sump takes on alot of water and some of the bio balls are submerged also the water level in the overflow box becomes lower than the waterlevel in the tank causing a water fall effect and it is becoming noisy. The pump is also noisy is there a way I can silence it? I went to this setup becuase I heard that they are much quiter than a hang on setup. Please Help!

The first thing i would do is set the over flow box in the tank at a height that put the water level in the tank were you want it. Set it a level that makes less noise and the level looks good.

The sump will probably be low as you mentioned becasue the tank is holding more water. Turn off the pump and wait for the tank to stop draining into the sump. The you can fill the sump to it's maxium level.

Turn on the pump and the tank will start to overflow into the sump (sump level will drop) and this is your highest operationg level.

Good idea to mark this level so you do not fill the sump beyound this point while running or the sump will over flow when the pump is turned off.

I'm having trouble getting the air bubbles out of my overflow tubes. Any idea how to help?
yeah, start a new thread and include all the pertinent info and some pix and there will be many here to help you...
this guys thread ain't the place to ask...;)

I agree with epond:

Set the overflow box to a point that you want the water level to be in the tank. This means the in tank part of the overflow box is at the water level in the main tank. (This should be just above the top trim).

The water level in the out of tank part of the overflow box part will be LOWER than the main tank water level. (see pic)

Fill the tank till the overflow starts and begins to fill the sump. At this point start the pump. Let the two equalize. Add water in small cups until the pump is covered and you are done.

Here is my overflow box. Look at how the water level in the overflow is lower than the tank water level.

Nice looking sump by the way!

^^^ all good advice. to quiet my noisy pump, I sat it on some sponge in my sump. can't even tell it's on now. also allows you to keep a bit more water in your sump.
