Alright so I recently set up my first wet/dry sump on a 55 gallon tank that already had an emp 400 on it. My question is even though this is a relatively small wet dry i put together it still holds in my best guestimate around 5 pounds of lava rock maybe more. Wouldn't this filter be a lot more efficient in most aspects than say a xp canister i don't know the bigger ones xp3? I mean I have I would say less than a pound of bio filtration in the xp actually more like half a pound at most of some bio max.. They both use similar mechanical filt which consist of only a filter pad of some sort..

I am thinking this sump alone even though it is small will do more than my XP canister and the emp400 which i have running on a 125...

Any input...

On a biological side of filtration do a lot more than a canister filter considering that you are using more bio media and that water is exposed to more oxygen than a canister. So yeah... wet/drys are the way to go for fresh nowadays.

:iagree:

Anytime you put the bio media under water it is less efective. The O2 saturation in water is way way less then the air we breath. In a wet/dry the bio media is kept out of the water where the air can provide the O2 and the water can keep the bacteria moist and provide the nutrients they love.

plus CO2 and other gases are diffused into the air while oxygen is dissolved in the water. a double benifit with the wet-dry :grinno:

see their you are finishing my thoughts....if I was *** I would think we were in love. :omg: :nono:

so basically I don't see why anyone would use something other than a wet dry if they are doing fresh.. Maybe in conjunction with another filter but I would think the wet/dry should be the staple of the filtration...Thanks guys for all the input..

i think they are *** lol
