Since red wolves don't get all that big I figure now is the time to try and get a small possibly a hoplias or hoplerythrinus so it has some time to adjust with polys and my Orino. I like the idea of growing out a smaller one with my fish vs plopping a monster in there once the builds done. My buddy will be taking bloody face, he is a competent keeper and he loves BF so when I asked if he wanted him he flipped out excited haha so he will be well taken care of and I'll be able to see him.

So got some questions, I've been seeing hoplias sp. "Misiones" and hoplias sp. "Prognatus" listed a few different times now. A search reveals one thread from years ago on here but wondering if anyone has one now? Or maybe knows what species they might be? I don't think they are Mala since the same place has mala under just common wolf.. Dream scenario would be gambling with the mysterious sps and ending up with a hoplias intermedius although ending up with a lesser known hoplerythrinus would be awesome.

I love wolves, they have more personality then most preds IMO and a straight fierceness that I enjoy experiencing. They remind me of dogs a lot haha can't wait to experience a new specie. Red wolf is like the intro drug to get you hooked on wolves haha

Also going to keep my eye out for gold wolves as I love their loom and I've been told they comm better then erythrinus with equal sized press, plus I like the idea of a 16 inch max wolf that will for sure not be eaten but also for sure won't eat bichirs

Pics of the species from some extended digging around, not my pics

sp. Prognatus

To me it looks like it could be a mala var but also looks sort of like the sp. Iguazu Wes had a while back which to my knowledge ended up being lacs? If I remember correctly. Tried searching for a territory or river called prognatus but no luck. Any light that could be shed would be greatly appreciated

Sp. Misione

Under jaw of same fish, sort of looks Australis like possibly? It would make sense if they happened to be Australis is they occur in the Misione province of Argentina. Any experience with Australis aggression wise?

I want one of the lesser known hops like Australis terres intermedius. Or a gold. Ugh I wish wolves would play nice always and pile like bichirs. Imagine that a pile of wolves lol

Oh I know that's what made me start this thread, just trying to figure out what species they could be tho

Nobody is interested in the ID of these?! Was I wrong to think there were a good bit wolf lovers on here? Let's solve some mysteries here so we can know some specie other then curu lac mala and aimara. Most of my buddies had no idea there were any more and we are all trying to figure this out. Pretty sure the sp. Misiones is Australis , the prognatus though is stumping me. It has HUGE eyes which reminds me if aimara, obv not aimara, maybe terres?

I cannot help you at all in this but I'm interested to know about it as well. I had no idea there were other hoplias out there besides the ones everyone seems to keep

Wolf lovers: yes. Many
Ichthyologists: some, but not nearly as many

We are clearly operating at the frontier of classifications. Some may not even be fully described. Some classifications may change or may already have changed due to new findings.

If you wish, I suggest you start out with linking scientific articles in this thread, which would be invaluable in IDing. That'd be awesome

Lastly, some ID might require working with immobilized fish, eg counting rows of scales, or characterizing gill pathology. ID by photo is often not easy

Having said that, /\/\FK is the place to do it. There is no better, unless you're in a Limnology Department.

We have amazing members here, with knowledge often exceeding that of PhDs in specific areas. Some members even have PhDs. Best example is Solomon, who will be presenting again at our Konvention. Are you coming?

I'm hoping to! I got my one buddy into it and he's emulated my tank in miniature lol he's got a tiny red wolf, bunch of small UJ bichirs and a 2 inch pbass. He's actually better equipped then me, he's got an indoor pond he can put things in once they get large :/ and his parents already conceded to changing the stock from some koi. How does koi not register as a word?! Its auto correcting me to moi lol

Yes very good points on the ID, I was trying to figure out the specific species in question before I order though things like LL scale count and such is impossible as SA is about 8 hours away from me. I was hoping someone might be able to at least confirm the Misione as Australis? I believe matt showed some pics of Australis he caught while actually in south america. Might be dog owar matt I'm not sure

There's so many variants it's easy to get frustrated and say "F" it.

I've just went off trusting my sources (the people getting them)

I'm lucky as the big wolves seem a little less confusing then the small to medium guys.....

Gs always been a good source for Wolves. Has gotten his hands on more species then anyone else I'm willing to bet. Only case I've ever heard of him being "wrong" is with the "red Lacerdaes" which to my knowledge are the same as "Iguazas" and if that is indeed true, then it was the hobbyist and NOT G that was wrong in the long run.

They're kind of like Masheer. Get them into your tank, grow them up, and see what you have. It keeps the hobby interesting. ;)
