Did anyone get any experience with these unexpectedly bold animals? I had a chance to see a few up close last year when traveling to Wellington. Was quite surprised to see just how unafraid of people these things are.

I've seen the river monsters episode, they certainly didn't mind getting extremely close and personal with Jeremy Wade!
Interestingly my brother found an eel (possibly Anguilla) in a pooled off section of a river, it actually approached the gopro without a hint of fear. Eels certainly are something else behaviour wise.

I have some Anguilla marmorata right now which get similarly large but mine are a far cry from monster size at the moment... They do death roll (rather pathetically) when two of them grab the same bloodworm
