Just bought a new 180 gal tank and I am thinking about doing a DIY sump for it. Just wondering what size tank you guys think I should use for the sump. I was thinking a 40 breeder. What do you guys think?

I using a standard 55 for my 220, I think it would work well for yours too. The bigger the refuge the better, you will have plenty of room for it under the stand too.

What about 2 20longs, The firstone would house the skimmer and some live rock ruble and the second would hold the refugium or is that just compeltely contradictory

I mean you can do it, but you are just creating more work for yourself. I would advise as large of a refuge as possible, I really wish I had room to plumb a 125 gallon tank to mine to serve as a refuge, but no such luck.

Okay, Petco is having a doller/gallon sale so ill snatch up a 55 lol. How deep ofa sand bed should i have? Should I pile the rock up to the surface of the water?
