Hi folks,

I have a 300gl 8ftx2ft. I am thinking of getting a ray, one or two peacock bass , an arrowana and possible a catfish for my tank.

I have the tank up and running and cycled. I run a 75 gallon sump with about 1800 gph flow and an fx5 for filtration. The sump also is set up with mechanical filtration as well as bio balls and scrubbies. I have a background in the tank that is about 3" think so my concern is my tank big enough for a ray and which type of ray would you guy's suggest if any? I would like to get one that is on the smaller side rather than one that would be on the larger side for comfort of the ray obv.

I have read some of the stickies and some of the posts in this forum so fire away and help me make the right decision.

I have been into fish keeping for about 8 years now and consider myself well versed but rays are one type of fish I honestly do not know any at all about. I want to make sure this is a resonable addition to my tank and will be purchasing the fish I want with in a few weeks so please help make the right decisions so I don't potentially kill some expensive fish due to ignorance.

Thanks

where at in pa are you? if this is the same tank im thinking of you must have just bought it or you were the seller and never sold it. i saw that tank for sale around gettysburg,

anyway, since your tank is only 2ft wide, a retic would work and theyre most common out of the few really small rays. some say that they are harder to keep and would advise against it. i just bought one and its doing great. as far as the pbass, i really dont know much about them at all or how aggressive they are. i think an aro should be just fine. and i guess my opinion on the catfish would depend on what species you want.
let the experts chime in here

i really wouldnt suggest a retic yes they are smaller but alot of ppl dont realize is that they have that really long tail. so they do need a nice sized tank. also since they get shipped out so small thats why they in most cases die. if your heart is set on a retic get a bigger established one and dont mess with the pups. in that tank i would suggest a hystrix they look better than a retic and have a good attitude. it takes a while but you can usually find them and they should do great in that tank for a long while.

i thought they banned exportation from peru i think it was where they are most commonly found. i really dont recall much on that topic but i thought it was rare to find a hystrix

what about a tea cup sting ray? I have seen some mention of them and was thinking the name tea cup might mean they are smaller in size?

Yea thats me. I had it for sale. The only people interested either wanted me to part out the tank or wanted me to basically give it away to them for free.

I was in no need to sell it so decided to keep it and work on it when I had time.

A lot of size depends on the individual fish but Motoros are thought to be hardy but could outgrow a 2ft wide tank, I think Leopoldi are likely to attain a smaller size but are far more costly.

I am getting a Peal and a Motoro and the owner feels that the Pearl at 9 inch disc will not grow all that much bigger but the Motoro pup will outgrow it in just 18 months.

You have experience but just to be certain, add those stock overtime as they are all big ammonia producers.
