i want to start off by saying hello to everyone. the site wouldn't let me to alot of searching and looking at pics with out posting. so I'm here to make my first post and ask a question that I'm sure has been asked many times. so for that i would like to say I'm sorry.

if this post is in the wrong section I'm sorry i wasn't sure were to put it.

i have a 40g tank that I'm looking to stock with JD's. i would like to give breeding a shot in the future so i would like to buy multiple fish at the beginning so that i have a good chance of getting a pair to breed when the time comes. how many can i safely put in this size of tank with out over crowding?

well to be honest with you im not sure on the dimensions. it was given to me, ill be headed to pick it up in about 30 mins when he gets home. so ill make sure to post the numbers tonight. as the filtration goes ill be buying what ever it is that you guys recoment me getting. i didnt really think there was much of a differance as long as the filtered the water. do you have one that you recommend me get? does diff types make a differance in the type of fish you keep in the tank?

thanks for your help

you are not going to be able to have a pair of JD's in 40 gal for very long. JD's get very aggressive when mating and guarding eggs. I can hand feed my JD's except when they have eggs, then they try to take my hand off.

Any info on the number or suggestions on the filtration would be great. Thanks for the help
for a tank tht size, best filter i would reccomend is an ac70 or something similar

and also jac dempseys will grow too large for a tank that size, something that you could look into is to have a breeding colony of kribensis cichlids, very cool and easy beginner fish
