Hi everyone. I'm Wick.
I'm planning on getting back into the aquarium world after many years away from it. My plan is to build a plywood tank with dimensions of 8 foot wide, 3 foot tall, and 20 inches deep. I have my mind made up on 3/4 plate glass for the front view. However with a tank this big I'm going to need something better than an under gravel filter and power head. Or at least I'm under that impression as everyone else is showing off these sump systems. They obviously are a lot more efficient. Which gets me to my main question.
Where I live the electricity is notorious for going off. Mostly in the winter months. It is not unusual to not have electricity for 8 hours or more. When this happens and there is nobody in the house to act, how do you prevent a flood? I've considered placing the sump over the tank, but this doesn't look practical at all from a maintenance point of view.
I'm not 100% on the sump idea either. But I am 100% determined to have super effective and efficient filtering and conditioning of the water. I had a 75G tank in college and managed to create a perfect self contained ecosystem (minus food I'd introduce) that kept itself clean with perfect water using a combo of select fish, plants, filtration and CO2. I bred angles like crazy. So I'm going for that again except I want to eventually keep discus.
Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.
