did you just suggest he keep a pacu before he keeps a piranha?:screwy: .... that's SSOOOO wrong! do you have any idea how large pacu get (36 inches +) no one should keep a pacu unless they have a 500 gallon aquarium or larger

educate yourself before you spread bad info to others

now for your question: a 30 gallon tank is too small long term for a single red bellied piranha let alone 2 you might be able to get away with 1for a while but ultimately for 1 you need at least a 40 gallon tank and for 3 (2 should never be kept together due to agression issues) you would need a 75 gallon tank or larger

a 30 gallon tank is simply too small for the piranha regardless of how heavily you filter it

Blind leading the blind- horrible advice! Newbie read and fishkeep a little longer before giving advice like that. Do you work at petsmart? Sorry for being harsh but a pacu will outgrow a 30 gallon next week and it is too small for a red belly piranha. Try a 40 gallon long or something with at least a 4' long footprint.

you are kidding right? 30g isn't even ideal enough for a red belly piranha let along a red belly pacu......may want to do more research before giving such advice.

if OP already has a 30g it can buy you sometime, but the width of the tank isn't idea (presuming the footpring is 36x12) to keep the fish for live.
a 40g breeder (36x18) would be better if the length is limited to 36".
if 30g is your only option and cannot upgrade down the road then try to get a serra sanchezi instead of a rbp.
