Hi,can i ask you guys about how to keep a wolf fish species?i think i want to add red wolf fish if the fish just happen to available at my local petshop.i want to keep a red wolf fish or golden wolf fish.are they suitable for beginner like me?can they accept frozen food?are they territorial species toward other species ?what ' s the most important thing when keeping a wolf fish?

Welcome to the Forum!

Either Wolf is good, in my opinion. Golds are constant swimmers and Erythrinus are maybe the 2nd most active (take that with a grain of salt cause I don't think they are that active).

The most important thing about Wolfs is having lids w/some type of weight for security. Wolfs are strong and tend to leap (my Purple wolf jumped pushed my lid open and jumped to his death a few months ago). Other than that, you would keep them like any other fish... Over filtered, good water change schedule and feeding.

I asked this same question a while back because I really wanted to put a red wolf with my bichir. The general consensus was yes, it can be done as long as they are similarly sized. The red wolf isn't quite as aggressive as the mala. wolf, so it is easier to put with other fish.

In regards to feeding, my mala. goes through phases. When I first got him he would eat anything, though I usually feed him raw tilapia and shrimp. Then he stopped eating, so I put some live food in. He LOVES live food. I was worried that he would start only eating live, but he seems to do fine. Now I generally feed him a live fish (convict or mollie) once every week or two, and it keeps him eating whatever I put in the tank. Long story short, they seem to like a varied diet.

Hope this i helpful!

In my experience the Erythrinus sp. Peru was very active even during the day and the Erythrinus erythrinus was only active at deep into the night.

I had a red wolf fish (4") with a senegal bichir (8") and a peacock eel (6") and the wolf killed both of them within one week along with other tank mates until the wolf was the only fish left.

I have seen and heard of successful cases though, so you never know until you try it out.

Like most predatory fish it will depend on 'YOUR' because not all react the same. I've owned 6 wolf fish 5 mala and one red wolf. I had 3 wolves that were aggressive as hell. 2 jumped to their death and the other was ripped apart by a jaguar cichlid who went crazy one night. My other 2 were very gentle. Sold 1 of them due to species aggression. The other was my favorite. He would hand feed and never bothered a fish in the tank. He shared a tank with a ck and some cichlids.

My red wolf went throught phases of killing random fish and being active. Never touched feeders and loved flakes, pellets, and nightcrawlers.
