Hi all I have been thinking about setting up our aquarium again. Its 29 high and still packed up so....
I started researching on salt water first then a natural or planted one but then I remembered seeing these odd little guys at a pet shop in CA when we lived there and finally figured out what they were.

They were Mudskippers! Now I know what I want.
I have started searching into them now.
I am not sure if I will try to use our tank or get a long one for them.
I do know that I would like a group of them instead of just one , think it would be more interesting.
But would like some with a little more color than the India ones.

Saw at Franks where he has some Thai ones that look more colorful.
I thought I might see if anyone closer to me can order them in or not first just cause it might be easier but not sure.

Anyway now that I know what I want I have to get set up before I go any futher.

Okay I know I need at least a 20 to 30 gal tank.
Tight lid which I am assuming can be an aquarium lid with light. Or would a all glass lid be better? With maybe a clap on light to light it up thats made for this use.

I also know that sand would be better than gravel.
I found on Foster and Smith what I think would be good.
Its called Aragamax Sand - super fine also known as oolitic sand. From what I have read and been told I think this is what they are talking about.

Would live sand work? Would it be okay, good or bad? Just curious on this.

As far as canister filters go I am looking at the Fluval ones as they look pretty good.

I know I need a heater but not sure what brand yet.
Again Foster and Smith has one they recommend which is Visi therm stealth heater and there is a deluxe one also that looks pretty good.

I am also looking at a glass thermometer that suction cups to the glass.

Okay as far as salt for the water I think I have seen Instant Ocean recommended many times so guess thats a good one.

Oh and another thing on water which I am confused on. Do you have to use something to change your tap water before adding the salt to make it brackish ?
How exactly does that work?
What kind of water etc do you all use?

For testing what do you all recomend? I know I need something to test the salt , ph and hardiness I think but I am not to clear on this either.

Okay another thing I am not sure of is you have to clean the tank right. All I have read is about taking something like 15 to 20 out and adding back nothing about actually cleaning.
One thing I read said to change the water weekly varying the saltinity , one week replace a fraction of water you remove with salt water , the next with fresh. Any ideas on this?

One article I found did say to stir up the sand once to twice a week with back of net turning to scoop up debris that you stirred up into the net as this helps to prevent anaerobic spots from forming which produce deadly gases.
I don't know what anaerobic spots are but it doesn't sound good but I read this twice so I was wondering about this also.

Oh and back to where I was before I got off on this.
Exactly how do you clean Mudskippers tank?
Or do you?
How often if you do?

I'd also Love to know where you all recommend getting roots, wood, rocks etc for them to set on. I haven't seen or found anything descent yet except for some pictures in peoples tanks but have no clue where to look for the good neat stuff. So any referals here would be appreciated .

I'd also really love to hear what all you all have co habitating with your mudskippers too as I am thinking of maybe some other critters depending on how many mudskippers and how big a tank I get.
Advise on quanity verses size here would be great.

I'd also love to hear and see how you all have done up your tanks for your mudskippers and see what friend and pals you all have in with them.
What you feed you guys and what they like best?

Just anything and everything.
I am trying to learn as much as I can so that I can do this right.
And make a really nice home for some little mudskippers and maybe a few
pals.

You all can email me privately if you prefer no problem a good email is melsrhenry@yahoo.com.

I'd really appreciate all the imput I can get here as I am very excited about adding my new little guys but like I said I want to make sure they have the best home I can make for them.

I appreciate you all reading and answering my many questions just to let you all know ahead of time.

I am also trying to go through back post to see what I can find out.

Lets see did I forget Anything??? Possibly but I think I have questioned you'als ears off as it is.

But don't be surprised if I have more questions .

Thanks mel
And Good night!

@ one sqft per critter I'd definaitely go for a long tank.

Let's see if we can get some of the keepers to chime in before I rattle on :D .
By the way it's " y'all " here...

Again Welcome and keep us posted with your progress.
