Hello All,
Just joined Monsterfishkeepers on a recommendation from someone I bought a Xmas tree from this past weekend.
Wondering if I "Qualify" to be able to honor the your groups name, as I don't know that any of my selection of fish meet the criteria.
I run all freshwater, I have a 90 Gal with Ehiem cannister filter, 65 also filtered with an Eheim, and 2 - 29 G (1 undegravel & 1 with an outside the tank Power filter with Bio Wheel)
My 90 G has been established for about 1-1/2 years is well planted & has a wide variety of community fish ranging in size from Cardinels & Rummy Nose to up to a couple of 6 " Callichthys callichthys. It has a couple of decent sized Juruparis about 5" or so, 1/2 dozen each of both Regular & Yellow Congo tetra's, all fully matured & nicely colored, a staggler 6" redline Shark, other asst odds & ends + my latest addition, 2 young Urau's, roughly 3" & just losing their spots.
My 65 G was my original tank getting back into the hobby after about 20 years. It failed after about 6 months which was ultimately the cause of buying the 90 G tank. I pulled out the bottom glass, cleaned all the surfaces & resealed it completely. I brought this tank back online about a year ago & planned from the start to find one of my favorites, a Gold Datanioide. While I looked I put 4 Clown loaches that had been living in the 90 G tank to help get the good bacteria going & brng the tank into balance. Finally came across the Datnioide about 8-10 months ago, he's probably not quite 4" now. Have also added a 6-7" Fire eel & my latest in this tank was 2 Gold Severums.
I set up my 2 - 29 G tanks just about 1 month ago. Planned one to use as a holding tank for my feeder fish, and didn't really have a plan for the other tank, guess it was more a matter of catching the bug of getting back into fish.
I normally like to buy my fish as young as I can & bring them to maturity under my own care. Probably driven more by dollars than anything, though I really do enjoy watching them come to maturity, seeing the colors come to life & learning all the different personalities.
I've been putting some thought of doing some breeding again which ultimately is how I landed on this site. Out of complete coincidence when I stopped to buy that Xmas tree last weekend & the owner of the tree farm opened his garage to grab a saw & I see he had a gorgeous 150 G cichlid tank out front & a couple smaller tanks ones behind it. Got to talking fish & here I am. Then, to throw fuel on my growing out of control, pent up aquarium bug, he tells me he has a couple of 55 Gal tanks that he'll sell me. Crap, now I'm in trouble.
Back in the mid 80's I had gotten myself up to 14 tanks, a smidgeon of breeding, lots of fish trading to keep a nice flow of new fish coming & then dropped to Zero tanks for all sorts or reasons/excuses (a wife, kids, several moves a career etc). Over the years, I sold off some of the tanks, gave a few away, but always had several empty tanks down in my family room staring at me taunting me, asking me "When are you going to bring us back to life". I actually bought the used 65 G tank to force myself to get started again. Figured if I actually paid money for a tank it'd prompt me to set it up. Talked the guy down to a good price on the 65 G telling him I'd probaly have to re-seal it. Thought I'd really made out when it seems to hold water after taking care of 1 minor leak. Thus the failed seam about 6 months later, which leading to the purchase of the 90 G, and now finding myself with 4 tanks up, running going wanting more. All I have to do now is sort out where I'm going to fit a double stack 55 G set-up.
My all time favorite fish was a Black Arrowanna that I raised from about 2", with a yolk sak to over 24". Finally had to sell him off after he had jumped out of his tank for the 3rd time.
That's my story, finding myself well back into my aquarium fish, I have some nice fish decent sized fish, but Monster Fish??? I'm not sure. Definately have a few with potential, but the closest I can come to are the 2 - 6" Callichthys
