hey everybody I'm new to this forum! Ive been looking around the site and i love the pictures and this site. I want to start in this hobby and i want to know what cameras do you guys recommend for a new DSLR user. I was looking at the Nikon d40x, Olympus E-510, or the Olympus E-410. can you guys help me out with a choice whether it be one of those choices or another one. I'm on a budget of about 600.00$ - maybe 650.00$ and i would like to know which camera will give me my moneys worth. please help me choose and if it's not a problem tell me why i should buy that specific camera. Thank you very much! happy holidays!

Welcome! If you could update your profile with a real name, would be most
appreciated, thanks. As to which camera, it depends on what you plan on
using it for. Some are better in certain situations, than others.

Again, welcome to the forum! :)

Choosing a first camera is a big decision, because your choice is likely to affect your future choices of a second and then a third camera, because if you buy accessories (and you probably will) you will get locked into a camera brand and reduce your future options.
Having said that, Nikon and Olympus both produce top quality equipment and I'm sure they will continue to do so for many years to come (I'd better add that this is also true for Canon). I always recommend going to a camera store and handling your possible choices - which one suits your hands and eyes better?

Listen to Alan, go to a shop and try a few out. On each level, each brand offers a model that is similar to others. Canon's XT is Nikon's D40 and so on. Compare similar models and find one you like more. Your biggest expense is NOT the camera, but the lenses and flashes you will add as you go. Your best bet, because of that, is Nikon or Canon.
