I am super new to the hobby and just picked up a used 125 gal tank with the under gravel filters.
I currently have no lid or light on it and was wondering if I need one? I will be getting 3-5 RBP shortly.

Do I need a glass top custom cut?

You will definatly need somthing to keep the fish from jumping out! Most pet shops should have the glass that will fit. Also I would ditch the undergravel filter system because they are usually junk and Ps need excellent filtration because of their messy habits. Get a few quality HOBs such as three AC110s or one AC110 and a canister such as a Rena XP3. Good luck!

I'm making a lid and hood for my 135 this weekend (hopefully) I'll post pix in another thread when im done. Maybe you can make one yourself too:)

btw....welcome!

Without a lid your fish will jump out and it will stink real bad!!

Hiya skibum, I agreethat you need a lid, piranha aren't known for jumping but if startled they can swim right up the end of the tank and out, they are not real picky on lighting but a flouresent light hood will make the tank much nicer for you and they are not expensive though it might be cheaper to buy 2 shorter ones than one long one.
I would not lose the UGF, set it up with about 2 1/2" of medium grain gravel and 2 small powerheads, it will provide excellent biofiltration if you treat it right. I do however, suggest ALSO using a hang on or canister filter for mechanical filtration and some biofiltration as well.

I had my 90 gallon without a top for the 1st 2months.. it was a very good idea to get a top and lights .. They were jumping and i mean a lot .
