im trying to set up my 29 gallon as a planted tank and was wondering what i need to do to keep they plants from dying out in the tank...and what types of plants work the best/ look the nicest...thanks for any help

you need good light, filtration, and substrate. I have a 12 gallon planted and i use a coral life deluxe double strip. It has 2 18 watt lamps. And i have a penguin 100 filter. I have some black sand tpe substrate but its not the best for plants. You should use Co2 for your tank. I dont but its better if you do. Someone with come along with better suggestions for substrate. As for plants i have java moss on a piece of wood, java fern, bana lotus i think its called, anubias, and some others i cant remember the name of.

For substarte I use flourite, for lighting a power compact fixutre with one 65 watt 6700k lamp. you can get "CO2 Natural plant system" by Hagan to produce carbon dioxide and if you go with a canister filter, to keep the water surface still you'll have less Co2 loss. This is a fairly basic set up but plants should do fine.

keep the info comming...i have a "color max" light on the tank now is that ok...and im using a penguin 280 (i believe that filters for up to a 50gal). and where do i buy a begginers CO2 setup...and how does the CO2 input affect fish in that tank...thanks for the help.

29 Gallon Tank:

Medium Light Setup : You can grow Most of the Plants
65watts 6700k-10,000k (i will not recommend the colormax)
3 bags of Flourite/ Eco Complete/Florabase or 2 9 liters of ADA Aquasoil
Rena Xp1 or Ehiem 2213
Pressurized co2 or 2x 2 liter DIY Co2
EI Dosing (www.gregwatson.com)

High Light Setup
2x 65watts
Pressurized co2 is recommended
EI Dosing is Recommended

Check my 29 gallon, i have a 65watt setup pic and 2x65watts setup pic.

for co2 setup try this shop: http://www.aquatic-store.com/ or this sticky http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48156

There are a million ways to do the plant setup. Do you want to go all out, or just a simple starter planted tank that is quite easy, and then upgrade later?

simple starter and then possible upgrade as i get better...wat you got in mind wyldfya...by tha way nice tank fish etc....

Well to start out, I would use a 65W pc hood. You could get a deluxe double linear 130W, and just use one for now. Use 6700K bulbs. Some basic plants would be some smaller echinodorus (swords), anubias, java ferns, possibly bacopa, cryptocorynes, hygrophila, and aponogetons. A DIY bio reaction co2 bottle will work well. I would use Greg watson ferts, as they are cheap, and very good. THat would be a semi-basic setup. If you wanted even simpler, just a bunch of anubias of different types, bolbitis or microsorium ferns, and mosses. All that would be needed is ~20-60W of CF light, or 60-120W of florescent. In the long rung buying the more expensive 130 W fixture for this tank will work out better.

sorry but im learning here...what is a 65w pc hood and whats a CF light and all those little abriviations along the way...and there are so many types of fertalizers and such...ok ok im going to research what plants i want in my tank and fish...ill let you all know then we can take it from there as far as the most cost efficient easiest way for me to acheive my goal(i am a college student after all)...thanks.

okay im thinking about some amazon swords, anubius barteri on malaysian drift wood, sagittaria dwarf, and some java ferns...for fish im thinking of trying to get a breeded pair of goo obo and have some zebra danios swiming around. does this sound possible...thats just off the top of my head im still going to go and read up more. thanks for the help.
