I have just joined this forum today, and want to do things the right way...meaning I want to learn before getting into the monster fish (always thought it was stupid to get involved then try to learn) I know this has got to be a newbie question, but I was curious what the difference is between a red devil, and a midas cichlid was thanks for taking the time to help a newbie to the community.

Welcome to the forum! Although I'm sorry I can't answer your question (due to the knowledge I have not yet gained) I'm sure someone here can and will soon!

Welcome to MFK! ;]

They are basically the same fish. I am not sure exact answer to your question, but I am sure someone will help soon. They are very popular fish.

Midas- Amphilophus citrinellus, hence my name.
Red Devil- Amphilophus labiatus

They're both similar species, and are often confused with one another. Most found at local fish stores tend to be hybrids of the two like chick mentioned. The guaranteed way to get a pure one is through a reputable breeder, if you want I could tell you a few. If you ever have trouble identifying one, I suggest you post pictures of them here and we could differentiate between the two.

Thank you very much for your time, and knowledgeable answers I really appreciate it. I do not have any yet to post pictures of, and I don't need to find a reputable breeder as of yet because I don't feel I have enough knowledge about what I would need to do as far as responsible fish keeping, but thank you for the offer I will keep it in mind.

Welcome and may I say you are on the right track. Research what you like and want. Then research what you can realisticially care for. Also don't be afraid to ask questions especially on this form.
