Ok... I'm new to the fish scene.. better yet. I've gotten out of the fish scene since leaving a local LFS a few years back (i'm rusty than anything). I have a 30gl tank that I want to setup again.

My main concerns are;

Is it possible to grow simple water plants with just proper lighting? I have a coralife powercompact with a 10,000k bulb, and a 7,000k Blub, is that sufficent?

What kinda of filters would you recommend? I have some big ole Fluval, but I feel it might be too much. I dont want the intake to clog up with dead leaves and junk.

What are easy species to start with... Pretty much stuff I can possibly even throw outside and grow out? What do you all recommend?

Thanks

The light sounds perfect for a wide range of plants.

Any idea what model the Fluval is? Unless it's an FX5 I can't imagine it would be too powerful for a 30.

For starter plants look into -

Anubias sp.
Valliseneria sp.
Cryptocoryne sp. (Thought they do tend to melt at first)
Any commonly found mosses and ferns, like Java and Bolbitis.

Also try wisteria plants( hygrophilla difformis) they are very hardy!!

if you don't want to clog up the intake with plant detritus, you could try using a sponge over the intake; works very effectively on my tanks . . .

your light sounds fine (wattage?) . . . what kind of substrate are you using?
