Sorry if this been covered. Can i use plain soil (backyard) and use it as substrate to grow plants? Would it disintegrate submerged?

Not a good idea, diffent types of chemicals in garden variety soil. IMO

i am using it with sand over so the water won't be muddy you can't have bottom dwelling fish

i have potting soil in one of my 20 gallon tanks. i have each plant in a pot with a layer of gravel, then the potting soil, then sand on top. i dipped each completed pot into a large bucket to "rinse" them. it doesnt make the water murky...i have a few ghost shrimp in there with some platties...all is well
