I've never used a wet/dry sump type filter before. My other saltwater tanks all did fine with just a couple of hanging filters, but I'd like to try something different.

So I'm reading through all the DIY articles regarding the topic and decided I'd try making one out of a plastic tub type of material. So before I buy anything, I'd like to clarify some things in my mind so I don't mess up needlessly.

1. For a 55gal tank. I read in one of the threads that a 20-25 gal sump would be good. So for this set up, what type/power/size pumps would I need?

2. I was thinking of adding a hanging protein skimmer to part of the sump. Just because my friend is giving me his old one. Is that a good idea? Or is it better to just hang it on the tank?

3. I also read somewhere about using mangrove plants. I have a ton of that near my house. Should I build a chamber for this in the sump tank?

Thanks!

As far as the pump size, typical tunrnover for a freshwater tank is 3-5 times. This would say that you at least need a pump that will put out 200pgh at the desired head hight.

Not sure for salt except that it is a lot higher.
