I have a 36 Gallon tall tank. Its 30"x12.5"x22.5" that I am thinking of going saltwater with. If I set it up with some live sand and live rock and an emperor 400 hob filter rated for a 90 gallon would I be able to run this sized tank with say a few clowns, some inverts, and a couple gobys? I have a few fw cichlid tanks and have been taking care of them for years but I would like to do saltwater and possibly put fake corals on live rock for the clowns to play in and such. Is it ok to put fake corals and anemones in a FOWLR setup?

Should be fine. Live sand isin't really needed, the live rock will be enough to seed it so it will be "live" in a month or so anyways.

No harm in putting fake corals in a FOWLR.

thanks for the reply how long do these setups need to be up and running before i can introduce fish? i always hear how hard it is to keep saltwater fish alive and thats a lot of money to shell out for a fish i cant take care of

A lot depends on the quality of the live rock, as too how long the cycle takes..average is about 4 - 5 weeks for the cycle to complete...large water change, time to slowly stock...

yeah with saltwater i need to introduce the fish slowly over time right? with freshwater you usually want to introduce all at the same time so they dont fight. also when i go to my LFS he sells "clown fish" and "black clown fish" none of which have a species name. is there a different type of clown fish I should get for this size tank or just any standard clown. and what about a blue tang or do they get too big for this tank?

WAY too big

No tangs can fit in that tank. Clowns can pretty much fit in anything bigger than a Betta bowl. (exaggeration)

And yes, introduce slowly after cycle. Only introduce fish and fragile inverts after you are 100% the cycle is finished.

thanks for the info if i wanted to do a clown pair and some inverts what inverts would you suggest and could i do the bright multicolored gobys? sorry i dont know the name.. for inverts i was thinking some sort of crab and maybe a peppermint shrimp? would i be able to put a breeding pair of clowns, a goby, and say 2 inverts in there? if so would i be able to add more fish as well? like i said nooby here all i know is FW bio loads and stuff i dont know much about saltwater..

emporors are really nice filters but i really only use them for smaller 10 to15 gallon sw tanks and religously do water changes on them, if u arent interested in running a sump i would atleast get a fluval 405 or similar size canister filter, that emporor isnt going to give u near the flow u need to have in a tank that size, in my 29 reef i have over 800gph of flow
