Hi. i just joined this website today. i started keeping fish a little over a year ago and i am loving the hobby. I have a 100 gallon corner tank and just recently started a 125 standard. I have managed to keep alive 2 oscars a peacock bass a couple of green terrors and one sweet jardini aro. oh and three tinfoil barbs. Iam beginning to get a descent hold on water chemistry and have realized a few errors. was hoping for some sound advice. the local fish stores seem more interested in acting like they know what they are talking about than actually giving sound advice. in my 125 i plan to keep my jardini and any one else he wont anialate. tinfoil barbs seem to do best. the lfs sold me on crushed coral as substrate and i figure out afterward that is not condusive to low ph which i read is best for the jardini. any advice on substrate. fish to keep with him or anything else would be much appreciated. oh i have two clown loaches in with him now but had four a few days ago so.....oh and running an fx6

crushed coral will send PH through the roof. inert things like sand and gravel work well, bare bottom or tile is easy to keep your tabk really clean. warning: jardini tend to get very agressive and often anibilate tankmates. to soften water and get the ph down driftwood works well or peat. there are chemicals and blackwater extract, but i try to avoid most chemicals. welcome to MFK! lots of great people and great info here

Thanks for the quick reply. silica sand will work? Kinda stuck with the crushed coral for a min it seems. just got the tank to cycle well and like a dummy cleaned it to enthusiastically . Cycle starting to take again it appears.. still hoping jardini survives. very worried about changing bottom again until tank has a solid cycle under it.

id get it out of there as your fx6 holds 99% of the bio in the tank. really just about any sand works just find what you think looks great. you will learn many pet stores would rather sell the wrong stuff than give you good advice.

The fx6 has not cycled. the jardini is hanging on by a thread now.Im hoping that he survive through this cycle. if i tear apart the tank. i would think he will probably not survive.

Welcome to the forum. I use Quikrete play sand in my 36 gallon (as well as my hermit crab tank). It's like $3/50lbs.
