i got him when he was 5-6 inches and now hes 14 inches. its taken him about 18-24 months to reach 14. ill have more updates when his surroundings are different. he has had alot of tankmates in his time and his new mates will be 3 bichirs. 1 ornate 1 endi and 1 delhezi with a nice pool sand substrate and some upside down branches to make a root system. i almost let him go when he was 10 inches but decided not and am glad i kept him. here are a few pics.

very cool fish. Not a good idea to ever realease a captive animal as they might have picked up a bug that is not detrimental to them but will wreck havok on the local eco-system. I have been looking for one locally but have not had any luck....

hes looking great.
the tank looks a wee bit too small to turn around though.
i thought they grew much faster?

he was in my 180 but i sit around my 75 more often so i put him in the 75 and want to do the tank rearanging with the bichirs. right now hes really not to big as he is very torpedo shaped like a bichir and doesnt swim alot. i guess i shouldnt say he doesnt swim alot he swims nice and smooth kinda llike a arow. not fast like a dorado but when he grows a couple more inches then back to the 180.

thanks for the kind words. im glad you guys like him

Nice looking fish. I always thought they looked more like a channa but from these pics I can't really see how people confuse them. Is he aggressive? Ever any probs with tankmates?

not aggressive unless another fish starts the fight. im going to do a prehistoric tank with him. its going to be him and about 5 bichirs. they get along great.

Nice bowfin!!! I really have something to look forward to I guess. What were you feeding him to get so big so fast??
actually i think there slow growers going againnst popular opinioun. me and my buddy got ours at the same time and he raised his in a 125 and i raised mine in a 180 mine was fed mostly krill diet and and cichlid sticks but i only fed once a day. his was on a minnow and krill diet and both grew about the same rate. ive had people tell me there growth rate was just as fast as the red snakehead but its not even close.
