My fish haven't had any live food for over a month. I decided it was time for a treat. I asked the manager what I could have for feeders. We take in many hybrid Africans in trade. I have no idea why we do this, they all look terrible. Most of them are grey or brown. I call them Electric Brown Peacocks :hitting:
He said I could have as many as I wanted. I took half a dozen for my cichla, oscar, and LMB. I have to think that these are a decent choice for feeders. What do you think? My fish get a treat once a month or so, so it may be a moot point anyway.

These sound like fish that should have been culled, as long as you remember that ANY newly introduced fish has a potential for introducing disease then I see no reason not to use them. They are a better choice than goldfish or rosie reds.

Oh .... your right with that info..so many people have sick fish if they don't quarenteen for at least a month..and even then you don't know what they carry.. or harbour within..alot of female africans are plain looking.. but they are probably hybrids..

Yes^^ Not only that, the store actually gave people money for them!

The only harm I see is disease and parasties. God only knows the history of those fish hopping from LFS to fishkeeper and back to the LFS. Would suck to loose your fish over a feeder.

True, but I am willing to bet the goldfish are in generally worse health. We've had these fish for months. That's why they gave them to me.

Ewurm... i hope you do not take offense.. because i would feel terrible ..but everyday in LFS they add fish..and they take fish out..they use the same net and you dip from one tank to the other ..spreading all that bacteria and disease.. the only safe feeders of any kind are the ones you breed yourself ..and even though it is kind of you and all others to give treats ..i have seen too many times those treats come back to haunt you..and i don't want any harm to come to your beautiful fish.

My opinion exactly.. i am scared to death of it.. and it never happens right away..it may take a month or even two..{because our fish are healthy} but sooner or later you start to see signs.. you may not even remenber what you did..or you may get lucky and the healthy fish recover..but who needs all that aggrivation.. and worry..

i hear that...my lfs didn't have the feeders i usually get so i went against my first instinct and went to petsmart for some rosie reds and two days later my pike, midas and two plecos have all become ich hosts. i'm in the third day of the higher temp and salt treatment and things are looking alright. i'll keep ya posted on the outcome later this week.

Hmmm... interesting. I plan to upgrade tanks soon, so i will have an extra tank to breed fish in or do whatever.
Would it be logical to breed convicts as feeders for my artc?
