ok, this is a pretty specific question but I'm thinking maybe someone could give me a little advice....

My new 180 gallon has been cycled for about a week and I have this filtration on it:

40 gallon sump full of bio-balls and two small boxes worth of Fluval bio-max ceramic rings (magdrive 18 pump to push the water through at about 1600 gph)

Cascade 1200 canister filter with the intake below the media in the sump and the return above the media in the sump

**Penguin 350 HOB filter

What I would like to do is remove the Penguin HOB so the tank is more quiet and the surface of the water is more still. If I remove the HOB and put the media from the HOB in my sump do you think I will have a spike in ammonia or nitrites, or is my tank cycled enough already that it will be ok with just the canister and the sump running??

from the sounds of it, ur filtration should be enough for an ammonia spike not to occur. however, u should test ur water if u haven't already. what is the stock gonna be?

takes much more than a week to cycle so if you're going to do it, just do it now and let it finish the cycle without it and you'll be fine

The tank has been cycled already...no ammonia or nitrites for about a week now. It took about 2 and a half weeks to cycle, I'm just afraid if I take off the HOB now it might re-start.

I've already added my three black ghost knife fish and pleco from my 55 gallon, and I've recently purchased a thinbar dat and two black arowanas that are in there too....

you should be fine if you remove the actual HOB, but leave the media in the sump from the HOB. its the media that will decide whether or not you have an ammonia spike, not the HOB

Thats what I was thinking...I just need a little re-assurance. I would hate to risk the health of my new stock just cuz I want to make my tank a little quieter.

well, you will be reducing the flow of the tank. this will be the test to see if you have enough filtration to move the tank enough GPH. i would test for ammonia everyday for the next week and make sure there is no sudden spike. worst case, you can always just put the HOB back

True enough. The magdrive 18 in the sump should have a turnover rate of almost 10 times an hour, so I'm hoping it just dwarfs the HOB and it won't even make a difference. I guess you never know though...I'll be testing for sure.
