Why am I seeing recommendations all over the place to provide BN pleco fry with brine shrimp and such?! Shouldn't they be devouring leaves and algae out of the gate?

They need protein to help them grow during their early stages of development. They are also omnivorous species, and appreciate meaty foods just as much as any other fish.

Wouldn't daphnia and something like tiny bits of massivore food do the trick? Why are people still using aquatic creatures that require salt to hatch? Scuds are almost identical and do fine in completely fresh water. Think those will cut it? Worked for angelfish and bettas.

Newly hatched brine shrimp (1st 12 hours) still carry a yolk sac packed full of nutrients which specifically aid growth. If you 'wash' the brine shrimp in fresh water the amount of salt is negligible and they are the perfect size for most fry.
When I use a fresh hatch, any I have left (if not enough to freeze) I drop in my community tank, great fun watching my 3" Angel trying to eat as many as he can before the neons get them - like watching an elephant trying to eat peas one at a time!
