Salvaging ship from Barrier Reef could take weeks

BRISBANE, Australia – A salvage team could take weeks to remove a grounded coal-carrying ship from Australia's Great Barrier Reef, where it is leaking oil in a pristine marine environment, a state leader said on Monday.
The Chinese Shen Neng 1 ran aground late Saturday on Douglas Shoals, a favorite pristine haunt for recreational fishing east of the Great Keppel Island tourist resort. The shoals — off the coast of Queensland state in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park — are in a protected part of the reef where shipping is restricted by environmental law.
Authorities fear an oil spill will damage the world's largest coral reef, which is off northeast Australia and listed as a World Heritage site for its environmental value.
The ship hit the reef at full speed, nine miles (15 kilometers) outside the shipping lane.

chinese cant do anything right with the environment...or in general actually...way to hit the largest reef in the world..I guess it must not have been on the map huh?

I remember watching this on the news late last night... was very sad to hear about that especially since i was just saying to my g/f before that, that i would love to go back to Australia and go diving around the Great barrier reef...

Lets just hope they manage to save the GBR and do something about letting tankers etc going through that area...

So you think it better to leave the ship there? How would that benefit the reef?

did you read that in here?
I didnt see anyone say that, especially since it is full of lovely chinese coal. And no they will not leave it there, but yes empty ships actually can play a large role in developing reefs. One would think that the addition of a ship, if "clean", would only benefit the reef, which is dying off and shrinking at a crazy rate.

I usually dont make sense but half the time you post I dono where you get your comments from.

:ROFL:First the crown of thorns starfish, now this....I would think that with the GBR being such a treasure to Australia that they would have in place some type of law where passing ships would'nt be able to get within a certain distance from the reef...But then, some of these countries and their ships do whatever they want on the seas so I don't know what good that would even do.

Maybe the OP did'nt notice RedDevil's post.
