I've been meaning to ask for awhile, and I found my camera today. I wanted to confirm the my Pearl Cichlid is indead a Pearl (Geophagus brasiliensis) and that my Nicaragua is indeed a nicaragua. The Pearl doesnt have the color and marking of the pics Ive seen online, and the Nicaragua doesnt have the horizontal stripe down its body.

1st pic: Nicaragua
2nd Pic: Pearl

geophagus altifrons or geophagus abalios still too young to tell...

yeah i dont know about the nicaraguensis but that is definitely not a brasiliensis, its one of the more peaceful eartheaters that should be kept in a group

thanks, and it is a hard fish to grab a pic of. And its still a juvy, in my grow out tank, about 4", so I'm assuming it will get that horizontal stripe when it gets older? Also, anyone have more insite into the geo? The ones listed look close, but it doesnt have the long pelvic fins like pictures of those show, unless that develops when it matures.

my Nic gets the horizontal stripe randomly, it seems to change with his mood. he doesnt always have it but most of the time he does. hes also 7"

thanks

Both Nic sexes start with the black horizontal line. A female keeps it for life. A male CAN lose it as he matures. Males have redish dorsal and tail with darker dots in them.

Definitely not a Braziliensis

that is something that will develop as it matures, it will also have substantially more color once it matures as well, but these guys really like to be kept in groups, but hopefully somebody with more geo experience will be able to give you a more specific ID, however like already said these guys can be quite tricky to positively ID when this small
