Okay hey, so I have read many posts on this forum before, this is my first so nice to meet you all!
Right I'm having problems breeding my Nicaragua cichlids, It took me almost 4 months to get them to spawn, then finally, briefly when I woke up in the night to go the loo I thought I would check on my fish as you do, all of a sudden in the clay pipe there was probably 100ish eggs, now I do have many catfish in my tank so I did not expect these to survive, but they did a great job guarding them, I build up part of the tank specially for them so the catfish could not bother them, but then when I woke up one of the pair was hoovering the eggs like nobody was about! Then over the next 5 days they were fighting like crazy, they even beat one of my fully grown tinfoil barbs up to the point it was upside down floating I had to put them in a 20L for the night. They have now been reintroduced but It is so hard to get them to spawn. They spend a lot of time digging and creating a clear spot on the glass but nothing ever comes of it. What can I do to help them get going? By the way, they are in a 340L tank with 3 tinfoil barbs and a pair of convicts and a lot of bottom feeders. I already 4 tanks set up in my bedroom am I gonna have to set up a 5th? ¬¬ If it means getting them breeding, so be it. Oh and yes the eggs were yellow and fertile but they lasted no longer than 24 hours. I thought about taking them out but I know cichlids are genuinely good parents and I didn't want to mess the spawn up. Also, has anybody seen a convict x nica? What do they look like? >:)

My nics would spawn @ every 60 days, and allow the young from the previous spawn to live in the tank. The pair was allowed to form out of 7 individuals
Although when spawning was eminent, I always removed all other nics except the pair, and especially any catfish. I find catfish to always be a problem in any breeding situation
Because nics are the only Central American cichlid which lays non-adhesive eggs, and cons adhesive, the combo of breeding the two together seems a bit odd to me.
Why turn a perfectly good pure bred species into a mutt.

I think with good tank conditions and patience they will spawn again. The mere fact they are digging tell you that they probably have the conditions needed. Now all you have to do is wait. Duanes nice pictures.

thanks very much for the responses, the 60 day spawn routine does seem to fit whats happening, I bought them as a pair and I have to admit, they do not have a very strong bond, I have since moved them to a 60 litre spawning tank and added a danio as a dither and it seems to be strengthening the bond a lot more, I agree with the mutt, was just curious. I have since been able to tell when they go into spawning, they are brown at the moment with only hints of blue, at spawning they go complete emerald/turqoise. I figured it would be the catfish, I still think its crazy how my convicts spawn month after month without loosing the eggs. Cheers guys
