Hello everyone...I have 2 Nicaragua cichlids that I am hoping will end up a pair. I picked them up after doing all the research. One I am 99.9% sure is a male. The second, based on all the info I read I believe is a female. It is smaller, slightly different body shape, rounded dorsal fin. However the tail fin does show spotting. I know without a picture I can't get a sure answer, but based on the above info what does anyone else think? Can a female have spots on the tail fin? Thank you. If it decides to pose for a pic I will add it

My guess is that you have a young male. None of the females I've kept had spotting on the fins. Although the dark lateral bar is more characteristic of a female, it may not persist as the fish matures.

fug got it 100%. females won't have the striping and patterning on the fins, and even at a young age they show at least some bright blue on their face. there are really dull males, but yours looks like it will turn into one with some nice color!
