I have a pair of Nics in a 30 gallon tank (I know it's too small) but I have raised them from very small.
They are two years old and the female shows color and the male has a lump on his forehead.

The male keeps beating up the female and they have yet to breed. I started with two females and a male but the other female was killed by my current female.

My question(s): How to get them to breed...or at least how do I get the male to chill out?
I have tried putting a African Zebra in with them but the Zebra almost killed the female....But the male will finish her off if I don't do something soon....

Only way is to get a bigger tank sorry to say. In a 30 gallon there is No way to breed them without the male eventually killing the female. No room for her to run and no room for target fish

30 gallon is small yes, mine managed to breed in a 40. I had a group of them which I raised as tiny fingerling. Withing 8 months they bred. I had lots of pots for them to hide and did regular water changes.

You can use a piece of egg crate (light diffuser) to divide the tank one on each side, and if the male is larger, cut a hole snall enough for the female to cross back and forth, but keeps the male separate.

some times a pair will actually spawn thru the divider, with each on opposite side.

Thanks for the help! I had a feeling the tank was going to be too small!
I guess I should find a new owner for my Nics....
Tried the fish store for store credit but no one wants them....

I might try the egg crate but would be nice if someone made a clear one that didn't look so white.
Thanks again!

Got a few nics, trying to get a good spawn. May have to look for a new male as the eggs don't seem too be fertilized after a couple batches. Any chance you live in sothern cali?

Installed this just in time! The female last laying on her side and totally despondent when I walked in the with egg crate from Lowes....
Installed it and did a water change and about an hour later she started to fight the male through the crate.

Yes I do...I live in the San Fernando Valley. How about you?
The pic above with the new divider are the Nics. What did you have in mind?
