I am wondering what foods I should condition Nicaraguan cichlids to help with their breeding and all? They are currently around 4" so live food is a no-no, so what would be the best conditioning food?

Don't forget spinach. :D Freeze some spinach leaves and they'll carry them around like the flagbearer in a battle. Mine LOVE those Spinach leaves.

Which brand would be safer for them or are they all good for them?
Also, what would their spawning behavior right before they spawn? Will they chase each other and nip in their genital area?

Mine never fight.... they will protect each other. These are a peacefull fish and I keep them with mainly SA cichlids. I have them in with a large group (25) of Placidochromis phenochilus that are 4-8"and 6 frons from 4-6" and a few other SA

Before they spawn they will dig and dig and dig and they really like to have a cave to live and love in.

Here are some of their tankmates.

mine loved live blood worms. they only spawned 1 time a year for 4-5 years. not a prolific spawner like other cichlids.
I beg to disagree. I have found many websites that say the same thing, if you buy them young and grow them out they will form very strong pair bonds and spawn very often. The key is getting them young. You will notice when they are in spawning mode the black horizontal bar will fade leaving just a black spot 2/3 of the way back. Another interesting fact, they are one of the few species that practice "creching",where groups of females will combine their clutches and band together to defend the fry. Hope this helps, I have three of them (about 2") and two sport spots and one loner with a black stripe a black stripe.

As for food to help them breed. I feed New Life Spectrum, im not sure if this will spur them on but they look absolutely brilliant. And like I said before I have two in spawning mode and one not, coincidence?

Here are mine......... I agree that they can have a very strong bond. I sometimes worry what would become of the one that was left behind if one of them would die.

In the one pic you can see the one is gaurding the cave and they have been busy digging.

Ours are small still, but here's a few of them competing with Balas and a Leporinus (and each other) for a piece of the spinach. It's just the fresh, bagged variety spinach from the grocery store. Freezing it expands the cell structure in the leaf so it is easily bitten and ingested.
